SUN-STOP

‘Grianstad’ as Gaeilge and ‘Solstice’ in Latin literally translate to ‘sun-stop.’ This term aptly describes the celestial event wherein the sun appears to pause, rising and setting at the same point on the horizon for several days.

Since ancient times, the summer solstice has been an observed celebration by people all over the world. The ancient Irish would light fires to banish evil spirits and would keep this fire alight during the short night.

Coinciding with the summer solstice, SUN-STOP will perform as both an astronomical device and gathering space, offering an opportunity to celebrate the sun and the moon, and dance by the fire.
